Learn How to Reset a Check Engine Light
If you notice your check engine light come on while cruising through San Diego, it can be worrisome. Don’t worry. If There Is a Problem, Have It Resolved
If you’re ready to learn how you can reset a check engine light, we can help. First, you’ll want to make sure there’s nothing actually wrong before you do this. If there is an issue to be resolved, we recommend having your vehicle serviced as soon as possible. If you ignore an issue long enough, it can cause more problems and rack up the cost of your next service appointment.
Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable
Once you’ve confirmed that there’s no problem with your vehicle, it’s time to manually reset your check engine light. This may sound incredibly daunting to those who aren’t familiar with what’s under the hood, but it’s quite simple. Here are the steps you’ll need to follow:
- Turn off the ignition and put on safety glasses and gloves
- Locate the negative terminal. Usually, it has a black cap and a negative (–) symbol. For reference, the positive cap is red and will have a positive (+) symbol.
- Loosen the nut on the negative terminal with a wrench, then pull the negative connector from the battery. Keep it to the side for 30 – 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the negative cable and tighten it back up with your wrench.
After these are completed, you should be good to go. If this doesn’t work, we have another option for you to try. Also, please note that disconnecting your battery may also reset your infotainment system!
Check Your Gas Cap
A very common reason the check engine light will illuminate is because of a loose or cracked gas cap. To check if this is the cause of an illuminated check engine light, pull over to a safe place. Once you’re parked, simply remove your gas cap and put it back on. If the light doesn’t turn off right away, follow the steps above to disconnect the battery and you should be good to go.
