How to Check Tire Tread Depth

Healthy Tire Tread Depth
The U.S. Department of Transportation recommends tire replacement when your tread depth reaches 2/32 of an inch or less. Brand new tires for most average, daily vehicles have a tread depth of around ⅓ inch (about 10/32 or 11/32 to be exact). Note that snow tires or special off-roading tires will have deeper standard grooves to improve traction, so be sure to check the proper depth if your vehicle is equipped with such alternatives.

How Do I Check Tire Tread Wear?
Now that we know the recommended tire tread depth for a replacement, it’s time to learn how to check tire tread depth. There are three simple ways to measure tire tread depth:
- Visibly. Hopefully, your tires will never get to the point of wear in which you can simply see it from looking upon your tires. Bald tires are extremely dangerous and should be replaced immediately in order to maintain your safety on San Diego streets.
- A Ruler. Considering the measurements in the previous paragraph, simply fit a ruler in the grooves of your tires and read for current depth. If it measures less than an ⅓ inch, contact our service center today to schedule your tire replacement.
- The Penny Test. If you don’t have a ruler laying around your Temecula garage, you can measure tire tread depth with a penny. Simply insert Lincoln head-first into the groove. If his head is fully visible, your tires are worn and need to be replaced. If some of his head dips into the tread, you’re good for more mileage!
